Pause: The Power of Cultivating Space Between Words

Knowing what to say is a basic requirement of leadership. But the leaders I've learned the most from understand that the greater power sits in the space between the words.

To pause is to suspend activity, whether thought, speech, or action, temporarily and on purpose. It gives you room for discernment. It creates the gap between a situation and your response, and that gap is where judgment actually happens.

I wrote this because pausing is the least discussed leadership skill I know of, and one of the most consequential. We train people to communicate, to decide, to act with conviction. We don't train them to wait. The result is a lot of leaders who are quick and a smaller number who are effective.

The piece works through three situations where the discipline pays off, starting with coaching and mentoring. When you're guiding someone, the silence after their question is the most valuable thing you can offer them. Fill it and you've solved their problem. Hold it and they solve it themselves, which is the entire point.

Mastering the pause is difficult but genuinely learnable.
