How to Use Technology to Win the Talent War

Chief Talent Officer

Published online by Chief Talent Officer: April 12, 2023

There's a statistic in this piece I still find hard to sit with. Nine in ten employees find their workplace technology frustrating. Slow systems, long waits on IT, missing tools they need to do basic work.

Meanwhile, 53 percent say digital tools contribute meaningfully to their success. So the tools matter enormously, and most people are fighting theirs daily.

That's the setup for this article. In a competitive talent market, technology has quietly become a differentiator, and not in the way vendors usually pitch it. The recruiting platform matters less than whether your existing employees can get through a Tuesday without wanting to throw a laptop.

I look at both sides here: technology for attracting and hiring talent, and technology for keeping the people you already have engaged and capable. The second half is where I think most organizations are underinvested. It's far easier to fund a shiny recruiting tool than to fix the sluggish internal systems everyone complains about, because the recruiting tool has a clear ROI story and the fix just looks like maintenance.

But candidates talk to current employees. Your internal experience is your external reputation, on a delay.

Written for HR and talent leaders making technology decisions, and for anyone who's been told the answer is a new platform when the actual problem is the one you already have.
