- Leadership
Would you want to work somewhere cold, where pressure is constant, mistakes are punished, there's no flexibility to balance the rest of your life, and you feel like a headcount rather than a person?
Nobody says yes. And yet a lot of organizations have built exactly that without ever deciding to.
I wrote this during the Great Resignation, when millions of people were leaving jobs in search of development, balance, and basic empathy. The lesson a lot of leaders drew was that they needed to pay more. The data pointed somewhere else. Salary and time off had become table stakes, necessary but nowhere near sufficient to make someone stay.
So this is the practical companion to that observation: ten concrete moves for building a culture of caring. Empathetic and inclusive leadership. Involving people in decisions that affect them. Meaningful work with real development attached.
I'll acknowledge what "culture of caring" sounds like. It sounds soft, and it sounds like the kind of thing that gets a slide in an all-hands and no budget. But the alternative is measurably expensive, in turnover, in disengagement, and in the institutional knowledge that walks out and doesn't come back.
If you're a leader who's read the engagement survey and doesn't know what to actually do on Monday, this is a list of things to actually do on Monday.
